Unit Guiders are responsible for the running of a Unit. They are women aged between 18 and 65 who enjoy working with young people. They complete the Girlguiding UK’s Leadership Qualification and wear a uniform appropriate to the occasion or activity.
The Leadership Qualification is designed to help a new Guider through the first year of working in a Unit, with most clauses being completed during Unit meetings. She is supported by a mentor, other Guiders in the Unit/District, and the District Commissioner. Credit is given for prior knowledge/ experience, and the qualification is geared to the relevant Section. On completion of the Leadership Qualification the new Guider receives her warrant. She does not have to re-do the Leadership Qualification, but may need to do other modules if she changes to a different age group (eg from Rainbows to Brownies), undertakes a new role in the Unit, or takes a break from Guiding. Other training opportunities are available to build on the Leadership Qualification as the Guider gains experience.
